Little is known about the products that we routinely use on our face and bodies every day. Usually if a product is sold islandwide. there’s a basic trust that it is safety-friendly but not many will question if it is environmentally-friendly or “health-friendly”.
With that said, you may have unknowingly used product containing polluting plastics particles. These plastics are known as “Micro-plastic or micro-beads” which is small plastic pellets (also known as exfoliate) in some of our personal care products found in facial scrubs, toothpaste, soap and more. They are commonly made from polyethylene and/or other petrochemical plastics such as polypropylene and polystyrene shown in the ingredients list.
Each time you use products containing these tiny plastic particles, they slip through the filters in waste water-treatment plants and end up in oceans and lakes where the fish and other marine organism consume them. Since humans are ultimately at the top of this food chain, it is likely we are also consuming micro-plastics from the food we eat. As we all know by now plastics are non- biodegradable, so once they enter the marine environment, it is impossible to remove them.
